CHECK OR DECK CAMPAIGN RETURNS

Home | News and Events | CHECK OR DECK CAMPAIGN RETURNS

As climbing enthusiasts, safety should always be our top priority. Whether scaling the heights of indoor walls or tackling the crags, the importance of proper safety protocols cannot be overstated. That’s why we’re announcing the return of our “Check or Deck” campaign, in collaboration with the British Mountaineering Council (BMC).

With climbing’s growing popularity and the ever-expanding climbing community, it’s more important than ever to reinforce the fundamentals of safe climbing practices. Whether you’re a seasoned climber or a novice just starting out, adhering to proper safety procedures can prevent accidents and ensure a fun and enjoyable climbing experience for everyone.

As part of the “Check or Deck” campaign, we’re encouraging climbers to take a moment before each climb to conduct a thorough buddy check. This involves inspecting each other’s harnesses, knots, belay devices, and other essential gear to ensure everything is properly secured and in working order. Additionally, climbers are reminded to communicate effectively with their partners, discussing their climbing plans, signals, and any potential hazards they may encounter.

While the campaign emphasises the importance of buddy checks, it also serves as a broader reminder to climbers to stay vigilant and aware of their surroundings. Climbing is an inherently risky activity, but with the right knowledge, skills, and mindset, we can minimise those risks and climb safely.

Our staff are always on hand to assist if you have anything you are unsure of. Sometimes, they may approach you and offer advice. We ask that you take their comments as constructive feedback aimed at keeping everyone safe. They are trained to the latest industry best practices and part of their role is to ensure that all our customers are operating within the guidelines set out by Mountain Training – the UK the awarding body network for qualifications and skills courses in hill walking, climbing and mountaineering.

As we embark on another climbing season, let’s all commit to prioritising safety and looking out for one another at the walls and crags. Remember, it only takes a few moments to perform a buddy check, but the peace of mind it brings is invaluable. So, before you clip in and start your ascent, remember to “Check or Deck”.
