Brain Dead and Arc’teryx Present: ALL RISE London
ALL RISE FEST—the experimental program making outdoor activities more accessible for marginalized communities—is headed to London, for the first time, on Saturday, September 14th. Hosted at Parthian Climbing in South-West London, the event will feature DJs, and live music guests, together with top-notch climbers and competitions.
Brought to you by Brain Dead, Arc’teryx, Long Beach Rising, and Ashima Shiraishi, ALL RISE’s focus from the beginning has been to expand inclusive access to climbing. All tickets and merchandise sales will go back into our outreach of empowering communities and RISING TOGETHER everywhere.
ALL RISE’s “Festival-Style” Redpoint Round is unique in that it is designed to shift the focus away from scoring, towards group interaction. In traditional redpoint bouldering competitions, the setters pre-assign point values to each problem based on its difficulty, and competitors naturally only attempt climbs that are at or above their limit.
We’ve switched a few things up. First, all problems, no matter the difficulty, start with an equal value (1000pts), and then decrease in value each time it’s topped (-5pts). Second, all problems can count towards a score, so competitors are encouraged to attempt every climb instead of the handful of “hardest” or “most valuable” ones. Lastly, a competitor can only ‘log’ a climb if a fellow competitor first witnessed, and then validates that send with their initials.
Our Bouldering Finals are also designed to shift the focus away from ‘winning.’ In an effort to stay true to our guiding principles, we’re choosing to utilize a gameplay mechanism known as “rubber banding.” By dispersing a mix of handicaps and advantages amongst the finalists, we keep the leading competitors from getting too far ahead, and the trailing competitors from falling too far behind (as if they were connected by a rubber band).
ALL RISE has three categories for finals. Men’s, Women’s, and Non-Binary. $7500 will be dispersed amongst 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finalists ($2500 to each category).
As always, a Brain Dead onsite pop-up will be stocked with our brand new ALL RISE Event T-Shirt in collaboration with Arc’teryx, and Brain Dead x Mellow Climbing T-Shirt, with sales contributing to donations to support inclusive climbing initiatives and community projects.
