What is the Parthian Squad?
The Parthian Squad comprises of a group of young climbers, selected for their drive to perform and willingness to try their hardest. The Squad train twice a week and are encouraged to participate in other physical activities outside of this. The Squad members agree to a set of behavioural and motivational standards, which keeps the environment focused, encouraging and positive.
The overriding Squad ethos is to provide a holistic approach to youth development, teaching the safety skills, techniques and instilling the confidence they need to perform at their highest level. Parthian promote sustainable youth development encouraging a lifelong participation in climbing.
The Squad is coached by our in-house team, many of whom have come through the Youth Squad system themselves. This gives them a valuable insight into how the system works and how to make the most if it. Each site has its own Squad setup that follows a similar structure. The sites have a common ethos and operate under the same procedures. When it comes to competitions, the ‘Parthian Squad’ operate together and support each other collectively.
What factors affect Squad Selection?
Age Range
Participants must be within the specified age range for the youth climbing Squad. Typically, this ranges from 6 to 16 years old. We encourage individuals within this age range to try out if they like what the Squad has to offer and feel that they meet the criteria.
Climbing Experience
Basic climbing skills and experience are preferred but not mandatory. Beginners with a strong interest in climbing are encouraged to apply. Coachability is important, Squad climbers must be able to listen and respond well to constructive feedback. Whilst climbing a specific grade is often a benchmark, the Squad pathway is based on personal development and achievement. To compete nationally there will be grade targets which Squad members will work towards, but targets are also individually set with coaches.
Physical Fitness
Participants should be in good physical health and fitness. Climbing can be physically demanding, and a basic level of strength, flexibility, and endurance is essential. We encourage all kids to participate in sports other than climbing as this variety promotes a good all-round fitness and a healthy lifestyle. We work closely with our in-house gym coach who provides specific and relevant strength and conditioning to the Squad members. All this is performed with injury prevention at heart.
Commitment to Training
A commitment to regular training sessions is required. Participants should be willing to attend scheduled Squad sessions and actively engage in skill development. We require Squad members to attend 2 sessions per week, one of which can be a NICAS session. Climbing outside of sessions is also encouraged which is why Squad members get free climbing across all Parthian sites as a member benefit.
Coachability
Willingness to learn and take constructive feedback from coaches is crucial. Participants should demonstrate a positive attitude and a growth mindset. The coaches are there to support the development of the individuals.
Team Player Mentality
A strong sense of teamwork and cooperation is essential. Although climbing is an individual sport, it often involves group activities and support, and participants should be able to work effectively with their Squad mates.
Parental/Carer Support
Parental/Carer involvement and support are vital. Parents or guardians should be willing to encourage and facilitate their child’s participation in Squad activities, including transportation to and from training sessions and competitions.
Equipment
Participants are required to have appropriate climbing gear, most importantly correctly fitted climbing shoes. The Squad can provide guidance on other specific equipment requirements. All Squad Members get 20% off retail in all Parthian shops
Academic Commitment
Participants are expected to maintain a satisfactory level of academic performance. Balancing academic commitments with training is essential for the holistic development of our youth climbers. We encourage the squad to keep up with school work and let us know if there is any way we can better support the kids in this area through scheduling requirements or any other specific needs.
Safety Awareness
A commitment to safety protocols and guidelines is non-negotiable. Participants must adhere to all safety procedures and guidelines established by the coaching staff and the facility. We encourage Participation in the NICAS scheme, which promotes climbing safety and good general awareness of climbing etiquette.
